About

Photo: Michele V. Wagner

Although originally from a suburb outside Tulsa, Oklahoma, I have settled in Fort Smith, Arkansas, with my husband and two young children after spending several years in Chicago. My poems and essays have appeared in publications such as Fare Forward, Susurrus, and Front Porch Republic, among others. I have an MA in English from the University of Tulsa—with a focus on Twentieth-Century American Literature—and serve as Book Review Editor for Psaltery & Lyre. I’m also the Founder and Editor of Belle Point Press, a new small press celebrating the literary culture and community of the American Mid-South.

My background has been an odd mix of education (mostly in higher ed) and nonprofit work (mostly in hunger relief). I’ve lived on Elysian Fields in New Orleans and in a soup kitchen in Chicago. As a convert to Catholicism from the Southern Baptist community and a lifelong dweller among the borderlands (social, geographical, spiritual, and everywhere in between), I’m especially drawn to reading, writing, and talking about people who tend to find themselves on the fringes.
